The quick answer
Self-host when you want control and can maintain the machine and connection. Rent managed game hosting when your group values convenience and a panel. Choose a VPS only if you want to manage the operating system too.
Based on linked official documentation and editorial guidance. This is not a hands-on server test or a verified hosting recommendation.
The real cost is the work you keep
For a weekend with friends, the cheapest option on paper may be the one that takes the longest to make usable. For an experienced administrator, paying for a restricted panel may feel equally wasteful. Start with the work someone in your group actually wants to own.
Write down who will update the server, investigate a failed start, export a backup, and renew the bill. If the answer to every item is the same busy person, make sure the choice still works when they are away for a week.
A dedicated server describes the game process’s role; it does not necessarily mean an entire physical machine is reserved for you. Ask providers what resources are shared and what limits apply instead of relying on the product label.
Three ways to keep a shared world online
| Route | You manage | Good fit |
|---|---|---|
| Spare PC at home | Machine, power, network, server, backups | People who want control and accept home-network maintenance |
| VPS | Operating system, security, server, backups | Administrators comfortable managing a remote system |
| Managed game host | Game configuration and a recovery plan; scope varies | Groups that want a panel and a simpler setup |
These are typical responsibility boundaries, not guarantees about every service. A provider’s backup feature, mod support, or update policy still needs to be checked on the actual plan you intend to buy.
Self-hosting: control with a practical boundary
Use a home machine when you can keep it available, understand the connection route, and are happy maintaining it. Include electricity and your own time in the decision, even if you already own the hardware. A computer that is also used for school or work has another job competing with the server.
Test access from outside the house early. Some networking constraints are easier to discover before you spend an evening configuring mods. Valheim’s Steam and crossplay backends illustrate why the game’s connection method matters.
Keep the world portable. An export you can move to another machine gives you a way out if home hosting becomes inconvenient. Check that process while the server is healthy, rather than during an outage.
Managed hosting: pay for the work it removes
A panel is useful when it gives the group clear controls for starting, stopping, configuration, and recovery. Evaluate those actions, not the number of feature icons on a sales page. Ask to see how you download a complete world and restore one before committing for a long period.
Look at the next recurring payment, the region available for your game, and the policy for cancellation. If a promotional month is inexpensive but the renewal is outside the group’s budget, it is not a sustainable choice for your world.
Managed hosting still needs an owner. Someone has to review updates, understand the backup policy, and keep billing current. The benefit is reducing machine administration, not transferring every decision to a support agent.
Make a reversible first choice
Write three requirements: when players need access, what you can spend on a recurring basis, and which maintenance tasks someone will accept. If home hosting meets all three, try it with a test world. If nobody wants the network and machine work, compare managed plans with a short initial term.
For a VPS, be honest about operating-system maintenance. Freedom to install anything also means you own the configuration and its consequences. Choose it because you need that control, rather than because the RAM number looks larger.
Whichever route wins, rehearse an export before calling the decision finished. A world you can move makes your next hosting decision much less stressful.
Split the hosting bill
Use the recurring price from your shortlist. This estimates the bill split, not server capacity.
